The Boston Marathon, April 15, 2013 was a day we will never forget. On Tuesday, the first year anniversary, thousands commemorated the tragic event with the slogan Boston Strong: Wrong City to Mess With. At the finish line, survivors, first responders, ordinary individuals and dignitaries shared a moment of silence and raised the flag to honor those who had died and the injured who are still recovering from the shameful acts just one year ago.

With 36,000 runners set to participate in the 2014 Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21, let these 29 photos be a reminder of the power of the human spirit, embodied in the millions who call Boston home.

As anybody in that great city will tell you: “we own the finish line.”
